14 Nov Group Leader Interview – Storm
When Started: February 2012
Position Held: Senior Course Leader
Background: I have been working outdoors with kids for 15 years.
Hobbies / Interests: I love watching movies and sports
What centre do you work at and what’s great about where you live?
I work at Dobroyd Castle, Todmorden. I love the small time feel of Todmorden but being close enough to a big city in case you want or need the craziness of the big city life.
Why did you choose Robinwood?
Originally I applied for Kingswood without knowing I was too old. After being shot down by them Robinwood gave me the opportunity and I haven’t looked back since.
How did you find the selection process?
Loved it, very weird, very different to anything I’d done but I loved it.
What’s your favourite thing about working for Robinwood?
Knowing that you can make a difference in a childs life in a very short period of time.
What was the highlight of training?
Bonding with all your new colleagues and taking on the new challenges that you face.
What’s the Coolest part of your job?
Banter with the teachers.
What is it like working with 7-11 year olds?
Humorous, tiring, but rewarding.
Describe your first group in 5 words.
Ready to rock and roll.
What’s the nicest thing someone has done for you since you started?
I have too many to think of, we have some very kind and generous people that work here.
What’s the funniest thing a child has said?
Kids say some funny and strange things. I cant remember exactly the funniest as I’ve seen a million kids come and go. Although when they say ‘Trampeze’ it still cracks me up.
What’s been your funniest moment?
Lots of funny things have happened and do every day. One thing that springs to mind was when 3 other instructors and myself all ended up inside one small bathroom in one of the small accommodation blocks all trying to paint it whist crammed inside.
What is your favourite session to run and why?
I love the problem solving activities as it involves all of the children in the group. All of them can join in without any sort of fears stopping them.
Have you been on any social events and what were they like?
You name it I’ve been on it and probably helped plan it. Top notch, staff socials are fantastic.
Have you tried anything new since starting Robinwood?
I had never ever been caving until I started at Robinwood. I rather enjoyed it.
What extra training have you done since joining Robinwood and is there more you plan to do?
Well I am now CWA trained and have GNAS. I plan to get my assessment for CWA and level 1 Canoe coach.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying?
Be yourself, don’t try to be normal because normal is boring.
We have some very kind and generous people that work here.
