Group Leader Interview – Katie

Name: Katie
When Started: February 2014

Position Held: Course Leader with Technical Checks
Background: I went to Glasgow University and got my Honours degree in outdoor pursuits management and I have worked in a few other activity centres
Hobbies / Interests: I mostly enjoy climbing in my free time, both inside and outside. I also enjoy running and horse riding.

What centre do you work at and what’s great about where you live?
I work at Barhaugh hall, Alston. I enjoy living in Alston as it seems very rural and out the way but you can get to so many great places fairly easily. It is close to the Lakes and Scotland and we are in the Pennines. We also have a very close staff team with a great sense of community and there is always someone to go and do something fun with on your days off.

Why did you choose Robinwood?
I chose Robinwood because I wanted to be able to work in an outdoor education environment and gain my NGB awards at the same time.

How did you find the selection process?
I found the selection process more fun and relaxed than previous jobs I had applied for.

What’s your favourite thing about working for Robinwood?
The holidays and training that we get are amazing.

What’s the funniest thing a child has said?
The children come out with some amazing things but the one that springs to mind is when I splashed the children in the piranha pool. The children were more concerned about the fact that the piranhas could have bitten my finger off.

What is your favourite session to run and why?
My favourite session is either Stream Walk or Trapeze. The Stream Walk is really fun and the children get really into it and enjoy getting wet and playing in the stream.

What extra training have you done since joining Robinwood and is there more you plan to do?
I have done lots of training since starting at Robinwood. I have gained national governing body awards including, Mountain Leader, Level 1 paddle sports coach, Single pitch award and archery instructor. I have done training towards my foundation climbing coach and level 2 paddle sports coach. I have also done the Lyon PPE course, advanced driving and the Calvert trusts disability awareness course. Alongside these i have also taken part in running and attending training workshops.

What advice would you give to someone considering applying?
If you want to work with children and education in a fun and active setting then this job is great.
