31 Oct Group Leader Interview – Matt
When Started: August 2008
Position Held: Senior Course Leader with Recruitment and Selection Manager
Background: Art and Design at University, then mostly customer service
Hobbies / Interests: All about mountain biking! I did climb a little, but I’ve recovered from that
What centre do you work at and what’s great about where you live?
I work at the Todmorden Centres. It’s a great place to live, with stunning views and fantastic adventures on the doorstep, but still with easy access to the real world.
Why did you choose Robinwood?
Sort of more luck than judgement… I decided on a career change and had sent out a ton of CVs. Robinwood got in touch and I haven’t looked back since.
How did you find the selection process?
It was challenging, but great fun!
What’s your favorite thing about working for Robinwood?
It’s the lifestyle it provides… great place, great people and real development opportunities.
What was the highlight of your training?
GNAS training… I’d never done any coaching or leader training and I was hooked from minute one!
What is it like working with 7-11 year olds?
Different, always different… Fun, tiring and rewarding.
Describe your first group in 5 words.
12 Boys, They smashed it!
What’s been your funniest moment?
A deaf boy (Damien) had taken his helmet off during climbing. He started spinning round on the spot so he couldn’t see us signing at him to put it back on.
What is your favourite session to run and why?
Bouldering (Weaselling) at the Old School. We get to go off site and up the hill, it’s a real pleasure to be up the hill on a nice day and a proper adventure for the children.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying?
Do it! It was one of the single best decisions I’ve ever made!
